FAMILY BASEBALL LEAGUE History

2014

The Family Baseball League began in 2009 as the Fellowship Baseball League, a ministry of the Summit View Church of Christ. Its purpose was to provide a fun time of intergenerational fellowship for members of the church. 27 players that first season made up three teams and ranged in age from early elementary school to retirement.

The league grew in 2010 to include four teams and 38 players. In 2011, it remained at four teams, but now with 54 players. A similar number played in 2012, and that number increased just enough in 2013 (to 59) that the league had to expand to five teams. 61 signed up again in 2014, but to give the teams better depth and balance, the decision was made to reduce the league to 4 teams for this season.

At the start of the 2012 season, the league’s leadership noticed interest from family and friends of church members and began to envision expansion to include more of the community beginning in 2013. About 20 percent of the regular players in the 2013 season were new to the league, with no prior connection to the church. Now it is the league’s goal to provide a fun, enriching experience for both our church members and our neighbors in the Yakima area.
